May 7, 2011  |  5:45 PM  |  $38.50 - $68.50  |  Fox Theatre  |  313.471.6611

imagePublic radio station Michigan Radio (91.7 FM Ann Arbor/Detroit) and Olympia Entertainment will present a live performance of A Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor from Detroit on Saturday, May 7 at 5:45 p.m. The celebrated radio variety show, produced by Prairie Home Productions and presented and distributed by American Public Media, will take the stage at the historic Fox Theatre for a live, national broadcast.

A Prairie Home Companion performed at the Fox Theatre on February 27, 2010 with Detroit soul singers Bettye LaVette and Sir Mack Rice as featured guests. Last year’s show sold out in only one week.

This year’s A Prairie Home Companion show, on May 7, will feature live performances and comical skits by Keillor, the Prairie Home cast, and special guests (who have yet to be announced). Keillor will weave local humor into the show and share his signature monologue, “The News From Lake Wobegon,” with Detroit audiences.

A native Minnesotan, Garrison Keillor began working at Minnesota Public Radio in 1969. In the summer of 1974, he hosted the first live broadcast of A Prairie Home Companion, a program now heard weekly on over 580 public radio stations by over 4 million listeners. The program regularly airs Saturdays on Michigan Radio at 6 pm and is repeated Sundays at 12 pm. Keillor also hosts a daily five-minute radio program, The Writer’s Almanac, and is a frequent contributor to Time. He is the author of 13 books and winner of numerous awards for his broadcasting and literary work.

With Philip Brunelle, Keillor has performed with many orchestras, including the Detroit, Chicago, Milwaukee, San Francisco, Pittsburgh, Minnesota, and National symphonies. He has received numerous awards for his broadcast and literary work, including: membership in the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters (2001); The National Humanities Medal (1999); and a Grammy Award for the recording of Lake Wobegon Days (1985).

Loveable plus-size heroine, Tracy Turnblad, has a passion for dancing, and wins a spot on the local TV dance program, "The Corny Collins Show." Looking for the Pony by Andrea Lepico

June 2 - 26, 2011  |  $17.00 - $20.00  |  Detroit Repertory Theatre  | Website

imageThe title of Ms. Lepcio’s play takes its name from an old joke about the child shown a pile of horse manure who happily starts digging because “there’s got to be a pony here somewhere.” In this case, the situation in which you have to dig deep to find a bright side is a battle with cancer.

When Lauren receives the diagnosis, she turns to her step sister, Eloisa, for support. That way, she theorizes, she can keep life with her husband and their children relatively normal.

When you are in the audience at a play about breast cancer, you don’t expect to laugh a lot. Or enjoy the sweet taste of victory. But in “Pony” spontaneous applause is apt to be frequent. These are nice and brave people.
